WHAT IS LICENSE FREE RADIO?

Normally, for issuing a Radio License and allotment of spot carrier frequencies, to the applicant, WPC always examines the status of the applicant, whether they are individual or organization, from private or Govt. and also sees the probable objectives in the proposal of usage, whether for administrative purpose in national/public interest or in business purpose, for making a profit, etc. WPC always gives emphasis to the gravity of the application and generally do not entertain that application from an individual or from a purely private organization only for business purpose, to use the radio in a commercial band.

But, recently, in the year 2018-19, Govt. of India, issued a special frequency band of 446.0 to 446.2MHz (200KHz band space), allotted as the licensed band, considering the demand of individual groups of business entrepreneurs, and by imposing a limitation on the power output of the transmitter of the radio, which means Govt. of India allowed the use of such radios within a limited short range only. Now, to ensure such limitation in the product, the manufacturer is advised to obtain the ETA (Equipment Type Approval) certificate, through some Govt. Test Laboratories. Thus, Radio model-wise ETA certificate no. became mandatory to be provided along with the supply of a “License Free” radio.
